PASS DBA Virtual Chapter Live Meeting

Topic: SQL Server N-Way Clusters and Denali Availability Groups – sponsored by Idera.

Date: September 28, 2011 Noon Eastern Daylight time

Abstract
This session will provide a deep dive into building, supporting, and maintaining SQL Server N-Way clusters and Denali Availability Groups. From SQL Server 2005, 2008, 2008 R2 and now 2012, Microsoft has made several improvements to HA and N-Way clustering technologies. Here we will go over the differences between these versions, and go under the covers to look at cluster logging, mount points, MSDTC, cluster groups, patching, using Availability groups instead of traditional clusters, etc. Mission critical topics like how to I add new cluster instances without affecting uptime, and what is the right way to expand the cluster will be covered. We will also go over how to create your own Virtual N-Way Cluster for testing using iSCSI between virtual machines on a laptop. This session will be filled with real world examples, and demos to help the participants gain a deeper understanding of using N-Way clusters and Availability Groups to solve real world issues, while reducing the total cost of their SQL Server environment.

Creating a Metadata Mart with SSIS - Data Governance , Data Profiling & Code Generation
Speaker: Ira Whiteside
Topic Description:
Recently I have had a client that required migrating and re hosting a data warehouse from the Oracle environment to the Netezza Appliance. The application had hundreds of tables and almost 2900 Source to Target Mappings. This would have taken 1000's of hours of manual coding. For this client we implemented a reusable data driven architecture, via SSIS, that relies on a metadata mart. The end result a greatly reduced TCO (development effort) for generating the code required vs. manual coding. In addition the process leaves behind a metadata mart to report on for auditing and other Data Governance efforts. We generated over 100,000 lines of code and over 3000 load scripts. After implementation the application can be maintained via the tables and automatically regenerated, providing proactive or self-healing application architecture to respond to changes in incoming source files or target changes. In addition we will explore the use of TSQL as well to create Metadata Marts and SQL Code Generation

ETL Head-To-Head: T-SQL vs SSIS
Speaker: Tim Mitchell
Topic Description:
In this session, we'll compare ETL strategies between SQL Server Integration Services and plain old T-SQL. Is one better than the other? Should I just use SSIS and skip T-SQL altogether, or vice versa? We'll address these questions and more, and will take a look at some practical examples and a few head-to-head comparisons using both tools.

Advanced Memory Management
Troubleshooting for SQL Server

Are you having memory problems? Some of the obvious factors leading to memory problems involve the operating system and the amount of physical RAM installed. But most DBAs neglect to configure their SQL instances to use the available memory efficiently.

Join Sr. SQL Server DBA Thomas LaRock, a.k.a. SQLRockstar for this live presentation. Tom will walk you through every possible question you need to ask yourself when faced with suspected memory problems. He’ll also run through the Troubleshooting Memory Errors Hot Sheet. Don’t even think about purchasing more memory until you’ve covered each of the seven steps!

This session will help you avoid spending money on unnecessary hardware enhancements, plus you’ll also see how efficient memory configurations improve overall SQL Server performance in your environment.
